PayPal is expanding and will be offering investment services in early 2008. New investors will be able to setup an Acorns’ account on the PayPal home page. According to the Wall Street Journal, the major digital-payments platform with an estimated 220 million active users is partnering with Acorns, the popular smartphone app that invests your spare change for you. This one stop shopping solution is positioned to promote both PayPal’s and Acorns’ services via the natural synergy between the two financial companies.

Acorns has garnered some serious attention and now has 2.4 million users. CNBC dubbed Acorns the “new millennial investment strategy.” It operates as an automatic investing app and competes with similar apps such as Stash, Betterment and Clink.

The Connection Between PayPal and Acorns

As part owner in Acorns and with tens of millions of dollars already invested in the business, PayPal has a sincere interest in marketing Acorns services to company clients. As a known financial player with high name recognition and a compatible service offering, PayPal is in a unique position to leverage their good name to increase Acorns’ client base, which ultimately benefits PayPal too.

How Acorns Works

Acorns makes investing painless and easy as compared to other investment sites. PayPal customers will be able to access Acorns investing services on the main PayPal Home Page. Getting started is as easy as connecting the app to your debit card or your credit card. When a purchase is made, the payment amount is rounded up to the nearest dollar. The difference is deposited to your investment account.

A marketing statement used by Acorns is to suggest that if you set aside $5 every couple of days, you could end up with $1000 in a year. This new company markets to people promising to take pocket change they will never miss and automatically putting that change to work in an automatic investment portfolio consistent with their investing goals.

You can link as many cards as you want to in order to maximize your investment money that is funneled into your Acorns’ account. It takes less than a minute to link a card. Both debit and credit cards can be linked to the account for the purpose of rounding up payments for investment purposes.

The Cost

One of the reasons Acorns is so attractive to new investors is that the price to play is so low. Investors pay only $1 per month plus .25% per year for accounts with less than $5000. Students with a valid .edu address invest for free for up to four years from the date of registration.

How Does Acorns Invest Your Money

New Acorns’ investors are asked a series of questions to establish a profile and to determine the appropriate investment vehicle to build their portfolio. There are different levels of risk associated with the available investment options. There is a mix of stocks and bonds that make up each portfolio. They are ranked from Conservative for risk averse investors on one end of the spectrum to Aggressive for investors interested in taking the risks necessary to earn higher gains. Investors can take comfort in the fact that the portfolios are designed by a Nobel Prize winning economist.

Perks of Using Acorn Over Other Investment Companies

It seems that almost everyone wants something for nothing. If you are one of those people, you will be excited to learn about Found Money Partners who add money to your Acorns’ account automatically when you shop with them. The Found Money Page provides details about the partner brands that investors should keep in mind when they go shopping so they can benefit from the free money that is up for grabs. Found rewards are distributed within a time period of 60 to 120 days.

Conclusion

PayPal’s strategic move to partner with Acorns is sure to delight many investors who like the ease of investing via PayPal’s home page. The rewards programs that invest in loyal customers who shop with Found Money partners is a “big plus” that will bolster your investment account from your regular planned shopping trips. It is easier than ever to invest as little as you want to get started building wealth.
