Social Security COLA Update Coming Oct. 15: What Retirees Need to Know

For retirees who depend on Social Security, October 15, 2025, is the date to watch.

That’s when the Social Security Administration (SSA) will announce the official Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) for 2026 benefits.

What Is COLA?

Each year, Social Security benefits are adjusted to help offset inflation.

This increase—called COLA—is based on the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W) from July through September.

The September inflation report, released on Oct. 15, finalizes the calculation.

What Retirees Can Expect

  • Current projections from The Senior Citizens League suggest a 2.7% COLA for 2026.

  • The average monthly benefit of $2,008 would rise by about $54 per month.

  • That’s slightly higher than the 2.5% increase applied in 2025.

Why Medicare Costs Matter

While a COLA increase sounds positive, rising Medicare premiums may reduce the actual boost retirees see.

Part B premiums are projected to increase by 11.6% in 2026, meaning some beneficiaries could lose as much as 40% of their COLA to healthcare costs.

Why October 15 Is Crucial

  • The Bureau of Labor Statistics will release September’s inflation data at 8:30 a.m. ET.

  • Shortly after, the SSA will issue the official 2026 COLA announcement.

  • News outlets and SSA’s website will provide the updated benefit amounts.

What Retirees Should Do

  • Mark October 15 on your calendar.

  • Review your Medicare and supplemental insurance costs in addition to your Social Security increase.

  • Check your My Social Security account for updated benefit details.

Bottom line: COLA will provide a small boost in 2026, but higher Medicare costs could eat away at much of the increase. October 15 is when retirees will know exactly what’s coming.
