IRS Offers Major Tax Relief After Disasters—File by November 3, 2025

Taxpayers in parts of West Virginia impacted by severe storms, flooding, and landslides that began on February 15, 2025, will now have more time to file their taxes.

What’s Covered Under the Tax Relief?
Taxpayers now have until November 3, 2025, to file their federal tax returns and make payments without facing penalties. The relief covers:
- 2024 income tax returns (originally due April 15, 2025)
- Quarterly estimated tax payments
- Payroll and excise tax filings
Missed payments between February 15 and March 3, 2025, will avoid penalties if paid by March 3, 2025.
Who Qualifies for This Relief?
- Individuals and businesses in FEMA-designated disaster counties
- Taxpayers whose IRS records show an address in these areas (relief is automatic)
- New residents or those with records in the counties should call the IRS Disaster Hotline at 866-562-5227
Additional IRS Support for Disaster Victims
- Claim Disaster-Related Losses: Taxpayers can deduct uninsured disaster losses on their return.
- Penalty-Free Retirement Withdrawals: Certain early withdrawals from retirement plans are allowed without penalties due to disaster hardship.
- Free Tax Assistance: Help is available through Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) programs.
- Food Assistance: Around 3,000 households in four counties may qualify for SNAP benefits to cover food expenses.
