2025 SNAP Benefits: Who Qualifies as Part of Your Household?

If you're applying for or renewing SNAP benefits in 2025, one crucial factor can impact your eligibility and benefit amount: who’s in your household.
SNAP—short for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program and formerly known as Food Stamps—helps low-income individuals and families put food on the table.
Benefits are delivered monthly through an EBT (Electronic Benefits Transfer) card and can be used to buy groceries at approved retailers.
But to qualify for SNAP, you’ll need to meet both income and household composition rules. Here's what you need to know:

So Who’s in Your SNAP Household?
The USDA defines a SNAP household as everyone who lives together and purchases and prepares meals together.
However, there are a few must-include relationships:
-
Spouses must be in the same household, even if they eat separately.
-
Children under 22 living with their parents count in the same household.
-
Elderly (60+) individuals with a disability can be considered a separate household if they buy and prepare food separately and live with people whose income is not too high (under 165% of the poverty level).
And importantly, if an institution provides most of your meals, you’re likely not eligible—except in specific situations involving elderly or disabled individuals.
It’s getting more expensive to live—but you may qualify for financial relief!
Why It Matters?
Accurately reporting your household members ensures you get the correct benefit amount.
Misreporting could lead to delays, underpayment, or even disqualification.
Whether you’re new to SNAP or reapplying, double-check who qualifies as part of your household to get the support you’re entitled to in 2025.
