EBT Card Perks: Free and Discounted Benefits Many SNAP Users Don’t Know About

Many people think an EBT card is only used to buy groceries through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).

While food assistance is its main purpose, the card can also unlock several additional benefits and discounts that many households never realize they can use.

From museum visits to internet savings, EBT recipients may qualify for a range of programs that help reduce everyday expenses.

Museum and Cultural Discounts

Through the Museums for All program, EBT cardholders can visit hundreds of museums, zoos, and cultural sites across the country at little or no cost.

Participating locations may offer:

  • Admission for $5 or less for up to four people

  • Free or reduced entry to museums and science centers

  • Discounted access to zoos and aquariums

  • Reduced admission to botanical gardens and children’s museums

More than 1,400 locations nationwide participate in the program. In most cases, visitors simply show their EBT card and a photo ID at the entrance.

Transportation Savings

In many cities, EBT cardholders can also receive help with transportation costs. Local programs may offer:

  • Discounted or free bus and subway passes

  • Reduced bike-share memberships

  • Discounted rideshare services in select cities

  • Free rides to job interviews through employment programs

For example, in California, eligible residents may qualify for the Golden Bear Pass, which provides free vehicle access to many state parks when presenting an EBT card.

Help With Energy Bills

Many households receiving SNAP benefits may also qualify for assistance through the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP).

This federal program can help with:

  • Heating and cooling costs

  • Emergency utility bills

  • Energy-efficiency improvements for homes

Benefits vary by state, but some households may receive payments during both the winter heating season and summer cooling season.

Phone and Internet Discounts

Families with EBT cards may also qualify for discounts through the Lifeline Program, a federal initiative that reduces the cost of phone or internet service.

Typical benefits include:

  • Up to $9.25 off monthly phone or internet bills

  • Up to $34.25 monthly savings for households on Tribal lands

  • Additional state-level discounts in some areas

Some states offer even larger savings, and certain providers may include discounted broadband plans or mobile service options.

Entertainment and Community Activities

EBT users may also find reduced-cost opportunities for local activities, such as:

  • Community festivals and local events

  • Movie theater tickets

  • Youth sports leagues

  • Summer camps for children

Availability depends on local programs run by community organizations or city recreation departments.

Discounted Gym Memberships

Some community wellness centers and branches of the YMCA offer reduced membership rates for households receiving SNAP.

These discounts may provide access to:

  • Fitness equipment and gyms

  • Swimming pools

  • Exercise classes

  • Youth programs and childcare activities

Some locations offer income-based memberships or reduced rates when participants show an EBT card.

Other Community Services

In certain cities, SNAP participants may also receive help with everyday costs such as:

  • Reduced government fines or fees

  • Free tax preparation services

  • Legal assistance programs

  • Subsidized childcare

  • Employment and job-training resources

Because programs vary widely, contacting a local SNAP office or community services department can help uncover additional benefits available in your area.
