Florida Approves Education Freedom Tax Credit Starting in 2027

Florida will begin participating in the Education Freedom Tax Credit in 2027, allowing taxpayers to redirect up to $1,700 in federal taxes toward education scholarships, Governor Ron DeSantis announced.

How the Tax Credit Works

The Education Freedom Tax Credit lets taxpayers donate to approved Scholarship Granting Organizations (SGOs) and receive a nonrefundable federal tax credit.

  • Maximum credit: $1,700

  • Available starting: January 1, 2027

  • Credit type: Nonrefundable (can reduce taxes owed, but won’t increase refunds)

Only taxpayers who owe federal income tax can benefit from the credit.

How the Scholarship Money Is Used

SGOs distribute donated funds as scholarships that families can use for education-related expenses, including:

  • Private school tuition

  • Tutoring and academic support

  • Books, supplies, and learning materials

State officials say the program adds another funding option alongside Florida’s existing school choice initiatives.

Why This Matters for Florida Families

Supporters argue the program expands education options without increasing taxes, since it relies on voluntary contributions rather than direct government spending.

Florida becomes one of 23 states to opt into the program, reflecting a broader push to use tax credits to support school choice.
